Augie March take out AMP award

March 07, 2007 08:38pm

MELBOURNE band Augie March's frontman Glenn Richards said he went to the Australian Music Prize (The AMP) ceremony tonight for a few free beers but ended up walking away with $25,000.

Augie March won The AMP for the album Moo, You Bloody Choir, which was regarded by judges as the most outstanding and creative Australian album released in the past year.

In 2007, the band has already taken the number one position in Triple J's Hottest 100 countdown for the album's lead single, One Crowded Hour, four ARIA Award nominations, and recently secured a new label deal in Northern America.

Richards said the success so far of his band's third album, released in March last year, was unexpected.

"With the Hottest 100 we thought it'd be good if we got into the top 30, that would have been better than we'd done before, so when we won was a shock," he said.

But the band - which also includes David Williams, Adam Donovan, Edmondo Ammendola and Kiernan Box - isn't getting carried away with the early stages of success, Richards said, and will continue to try to reinvent itself with each album.

"I haven't been happy with anything I've done to this point," Richards - who's the band's chief songwriter - said.

"I don't get it when acts try to get popular by listening to what's popular and trying to (mimic) it.

"That's a surefire way to lose respect for yourself, and I have no intention of doing that any time soon ... not in a musical sense anyway."

The AMP, in its second year, runs separate to the pop-dominated ARIA Music Awards, and is Australia's answer to Britain's prestigious Mercury Prize which was won this year by The Arctic Monkeys.

The award is judged by select members of the Australian music industry from record labels, the media and the retail sector.

Augie March was chosen ahead of nine shortlisted acts including Lisa Gerrard, Bob Evans, Sarah Blasko and last year's winners The Drones, who performed at tonight's awards.

Also at the ceremony held at Sydney nightspot HOME, independent Melbourne artist Gotye was awarded the Red Bull Award worth $15,000 for outstanding potential.

Fellow Augie March lovers,
ahhh I just saw 'The Cold Acre' on rage!!! Wow!! And it was at number 9 too so I must be slow in seeing it.

Wow that was great!!!!!! eeeee *excited* It was so good seeing them all. I loved the location of the eerie burnt out forest. Nice shots. ahhh I loved it!!!
Then ‘butterfly effect’ came after and ruined my nice 'other world' feeling, damn it.

What did you think? Sorry I’m so slow in seeing it.

LOVE

11:26 am - Hi!

toratio
I thought I'd post and say hi. I've been a fan for a few years, seen them a few times, here and there. A friend got me into them, leant me Strange Bird, got me hooked. I was practically salivating waiting for Moo to come out. It didn't disappoint. Nice to find some like-minded people on here, people who appreciate music that just doesn't sound like anything else you hear now. I've seen them twice this year already, if they were touring I wouldn't hesitate to see them again. I'm just hoping they'll win an ARIA or two, but I guess i'm not too confident of that...

3:15 pm - aria nominations

aminor
"The surprise among the nominations for the 20th year of the Australian music industry's main awards night was rock band Augie March, which has taken more than a decade to break into mainstream music but emerged with four nominations.

The band's persistence was rewarded today when it secured four Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) award nominations.

"It's been a long road. There are other things you achieve along the way, but this is national recognition,'' Augie March frontman Glenn Richards said following the announcement.

The band's single, One Crowded Hour, from their latest album Moo, You Bloody Choir, has received more mainstream radio play than any of their previously released singles.

In the past, the band's ARIA awards experience has been limited to an engineer of the year award, for debut album, Sunset Studies, in 2001.

"This is the first time ever the band has been recognised in this way," Richards said.

"I can't believe we got four nominations, I am still shocked."

Augie March has been nominated for best rock album, single of the year, best group and album of the year, up against the likes of Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning and rockers Eskimo Joe.

"There are some better known bands in there. It's best to expect the worst possible outcome and then everything else is a bonus," Richards said."

Greetings Augiephiles,

Does anyone out there have accurate lyrics to Movie Mondays from Thanks for the Memes? I have googled and come up with nothing.
I'm too sleepy to sit here and try to decipher/type them out. Just had a craving to read them.
If anyone could help I would be most appreciative =)
